Boys and Girls, share with someone at home why Martell Mustangs have to sometimes put on their blinders during IDR time! :)
In order to be the best learner we can be, we have to sometimes put our blinders on if someone next to us is distracting our learning! Focus on what you know is right and keep charging ahead Martell Mustands! :)
We read this beautiful story today - A Story for Bear. Our discussion that followed was about how books can really make us feel! We felt happy, excited, tender, sad and even a little scared when reading this story together. Being able to read is "MAGICAL" , we can go to so many places, learn so many things and feel so many wonderful feelings just by reading a book! :) The video below is only music put to the pictures of the book, A Story for Bear. After watching and listening have your child share with you what he/she remembers about the story and some of the feelings they felt while watching and listening!
Read Aloud - Curious George
Comprehension Strategy Focus - Check For Understanding, Sequence of Events
Independent Reading of "Just Right" Books - We are working on Building our Stamina up to 20 minutes of Focused Independent Reading!
Partner Reading - Students are becoming excellent "Buddy Readers" we are working on putting the book between partners, taking turns, being a good listener and supporting our partners in using strategies when coming to a "tricky word"
Literacy Work Stations - We are practicing routines for our Literacy Work Stations - Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing and Handwriting.
Individual Reading Conferences with Students - I am enjoying reading with each of your children as we find that "Just Right " reading level for our Independent Reading.
Students will be bringing home a "Just Right" Reading Book this week. Please know that we are still working on finding levels that are a "Just Right" fit for your child. We have been learning about what is the best fit for each of us. To demonstrate this, I tried on Gina's coat showing that it was too small for me! I thought her coat was so pretty and really wanted to wear it to recess but it would not keep me warm. I tried on my husband's ski jacket but it was too big! The arms were so long that I couldn't use my hands to do anything. My own coat was a perfect fit! The message in this lesson is that we all have different "Just Right" fits for many things. Whatever reading level is "Just Right" for each of us does not make us better, does not make us less, it is the level that will help us continue to grow and become a better reader! I want everyone in our classroom to feel comfortable and confident within whatever reading level they are reading. See the charts below that we have in our classroom to see what a a "Just Right" book should be.
Thank you to our Student Leaders for taking the pictures for our "Just Right" Lesson! :)
